TP-Link router

These are the setup instructions for using a tested and recommended TP-Link wifi router in the StudNet.

The wifi router has to be connected with the single (blue) WAN/Internet port to the network socket in your room. If you are using one of the LAN ports your network socket could be locked or the network connection will not work.

Initial installation

Open the router's configuration website. The address is printed on the back of router or can be found in the manual. The configuration website likely has one of the following addresses:

Use the login data printed on the back of the wifi router for access to the configuration website, if you have not already changed the login credentials.

If the wifi router was set up before, please restore the factory default. Instructions on how to do that can be found in the manual.

Skip Quick Setup

Depending on router type/model for example in one of the following ways:

  • end Quick Setup by click on Exit

or

  • set up new router login credentials (username and password) or skip by closing the window with click on
  • leave Quick Setup and go to Advanced

Setup Internet connection

Go to Network → WAN/Internet and configure the following:

  • Internet Connection Type: PPTP or PPTP/Russia PPTP
  • Username: enter your StudNet account user ID
  • Password: enter your StudNet account password, which you choose at account registration
  • Addressing Type / Secondary Connection: Dynamic IP
  • VPN Server IP Address / Domain Name: vpn.stw-bonn.de

Apply the setting with Save.

If you have lost your user name or password you can reset your account.

The router should now connect to the network by click on Connect. The status Connected should appear and the Internet IP Address should NOT be „0.0.0.0“ anymore.

If there are problems to establish a connection check the above settings, especially Username, Password and Server IP Address/Name again.

On the devices connected to the wifi router, a dial-in using the Internet login is NOT NEEDED anymore. The wifi router will establish a connection automatically if one of the connected devices tries to connect to the Internet.
