My internet isn't working

Five steps to find the cause – from the cable to your settings.

First check whether there's a known outage – then it's not you.

Check network status
status.stw-bonn.de

Is there an outage right now?

The network status page shows whether an outage affecting several connections is currently known. If your dormitory is listed there, there's nothing more to do – just wait until it's fixed.

Is the LAN LED lit, is the right cable plugged in?

Whether your computer or a Wi-Fi router is plugged directly into the wall socket, nothing works without a working cable connection.

  • Is the network cable firmly seated in both the wall socket and the device (computer or router)? A broken clip on the plug is a common cause of a loosely seated network cable.
  • Is the LAN LED on the network port lit or blinking? If it stays dark, there's no physical connection.
  • Is the cable at least Cat 5e FTP? Try swapping it for another one.
  • If a router sits in between, the computer must be connected to the router by cable or Wi-Fi as well – check that connection too.

If swapping the cable doesn't help, the network card or the connection itself may be faulty. More on this and what to do next: Network cable.

Is your connection blocked?

If you have the right cable but still can't connect, your connection may be blocked – for example because of an incorrectly connected router or a violation of the network policy. This applies whether you connect directly or through a router.

What triggers a block and how to lift it: Connection blocked.

Is your account registered and activated?

Once this page is reachable from your connection, you can register or log in to check your credentials.

Start registration
startup.stw-bonn.de

  • Don't use the "Log in without password" option if you're trying to test whether your password is correct.
  • If login fails, either your username or password is wrong, or registration isn't complete. Check the activation email and click the link in it.
  • Can't find the email anymore, or forgot your password? Reset it under Password.
Are the settings on your computer or router correct?

If the cable and account are fine and the connection is not blocked, it is usually the configuration of your router or computer.

  • Without a router: IP address and DNS server must be set to "obtain automatically" (DHCP) on your computer. Instructions for your operating system: Network settings.
  • With a router: The router itself must be set up correctly (WAN connection, IPv6 if applicable), and your computer must get its address from the router via DHCP. Setup instructions: Set up your Wi-Fi router.

None of this worked?

If you've gone through all five points and the connection still doesn't work, support needs more details to help you specifically. What those are: Data for support.
