What is the StudNet?
The dormitories' own data network in Bonn — what it is, who runs it, and where to find more.
StudNet is the Studierendenwerk Bonn dormitories' own data network — not a plan from a regular internet provider, but infrastructure built from the ground up for the dormitories and operated in-house. It carries both the wired connection in your room and the Wi-Fi in the common rooms.
How it is built
The Studierendenwerk Bonn dormitories are linked by around 60 km of the network's own fibre-optic cable. Every room has a 1 GBit network connection, and every dormitory has a 1 GBit or 10 GBit backbone connection. Externally, the StudNet has a 2 × 100 GBit uplink to the University of Bonn. Who runs it
The StudNet is operated by Studierendenwerk Bonn, together with contracted service providers for day-to-day technical operation. On site, volunteer network mentors from the student self-administration handle faults and connection questions — usually faster than support. The rules for using it are in the network policy.
What you can do with it
Beyond plain internet access, StudNet offers a few extra services — a fast FTP mirror for Linux distributions, access to library services that are otherwise only reachable from inside the university network, and its own Wi-Fi networks in many common rooms. See network services for details.
