Network Services

FTP mirror, university access, and Wi-Fi — the extra services in the StudNet.

FTP server

On the FTP server ftp.stw-bonn.de you can find current Linux distributions such as Ubuntu and Debian. The server is reachable without a VPN, and downloads do not count towards your data volume.

Example entry for /etc/apt/sources.list on Debian:

ftp.stw-bonn.de is also listed in the official mirror lists of the distributions it mirrors.

University services

Some library and university services, for example from the HRZ, can only be used with a genuine university IP address. The StudNet uses its own address space, separate from the university's — so some of these services don't work otherwise.

To use library and research services such as Juris Online, you need to connect via the University of Bonn's VPN. Your device then gets an Internet IP address from the University of Bonn's address range. The HRZ at the University of Bonn explains how to set it up:

Wi-Fi

At the StudNet Wi-Fi locations there are several networks. Two of them you can use as a dormitory resident: eduroam-stw and StudNet.

eduroam-stw

For eduroam-stw you need an account at a research institution that supports eduroam. Authentication uses the credentials of your university or research institution. Setup is described on the HRZ page of the University of Bonn:

StudNet Wi-Fi

You sign in personally here: with the username and password of your StudNet account. The network socket in your room does not need those credentials — once your connection is activated you are online without signing in. Over Wi-Fi the network only recognises you by your login, which is why it asks.

The network uses WPA2 Enterprise encryption, and every device gets its own key. Most devices only ask for a username and a password. If yours wants more, enter this:

If your device shows the server certificate the first time you connect, it has to read wlan.stw-bonn.de. The certificate is renewed regularly — if your device asks again after a while, that is normal.
